Medicine, as a discipline, has a long-standing tradition of modeling expertise through tutorials provided in clinical practice. This paper attempts to identify the nature of human tutoring tactics and strategies in a medical clinical setting. An in-depth analysis of one tutorial session is presented that documents the types of support a human tutor provides in a medical problem-solving setting. Our long-range goal is to incorporate this tutorial model into a computer-based learning environment that can help internal medicine students in their clinical problem-solving skills. More generally, the tutorial model described in this research could be applied to other problem-solving contexts.
